Yilungelo Lakho: Cell Phone Rates

Cell phone users are expected to be paying less for cell phone calls from as early as March next year. South African communications authority ICASA’s draft regulation on lowering termination rates is currently out for public comment. ICASA wants termination rates lowered from the current 40c per minute to 10c by 2016.

A termination rate is a fee paid by mobile phone operators to carry each other’s calls. The higher the termination rates they pay each other, the higher rates consumers pay for their call they make.
